About Me

About Me

Hi! I’m Ceylan (JAY-lahn), an editor and proofreader with over 8 years of experience. As a quirky, curious, and fun-loving editor, I’m determined to bring out the best in your manuscript! I’m a lifelong lover of books, which probably comes as no surprise. I love working with my neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, and disabled compatriots, so please let me know if there’s anything I can do to accommodate your needs.

I truly enjoy helping writers and authors cultivate and refine their writing, whether it’s for a book, blog, article, or any other written work; fiction is my favorite (especially urban fantasy), though I enjoy nonfiction and writing too. My editing specialties are sci-fi/fantasy (really, any kind of speculative fiction), mystery, and mind-body-spirit (sometimes called self-help). I can help you create a document without distracting errors or plot holes so that your readers can focus on your message or story instead of your mistakes. Reach out so we can chat!

My Professional Background

I spent over 7 years as an Editorial Assistant for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles and 8 years for IEEE’s Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine, helping copyedit and proofread papers and articles about autonomous vehicles. During this time, I also edited and proofread business documents and grant proposals for various businesses.

Three years ago, I started freelancing and branched out into books, copyediting and proofreading both fiction (sci-fi/fantasy, mystery, action-adventure) and nonfiction work (mind-body-spirit, self-help). I’ve also added manuscript evaluations and developmental editing more recently. I work primarily with small publishers and independent authors (both self-publishing and those trying for traditional publishing).

As a freelancer, I’ve edited and proofread adult fiction (action/adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, mysteries) and YA books, nonfiction titles in business, self-help, and metaphysical (mind-body-spirit) topics, while also editing some essays, blogs, and marketing materials.

I’ve presented at several conferences on various topics and participated in a couple of panels about editing. I also co-organized and participated in a panel on disability, neurodivergence, and language for editors, helping to broaden the ever-evolving discussion on conscious language.

I volunteer as a board member for the Northwest Editors Guild, as a chapter coordinator for the EFA, and as an email administrator for the Editors Tea Club.
